Position Summary
The PRN Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) provides weekend on-call coverage for inpatient and emergency room services at (Login for Information). The APP is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing patients within the scope of their licensure and privileges while collaborating with nursing staff, ancillary departments, and supervising physicians.
This role does not include routine clinic coverage.
A back-up physician is available to support all APPs as needed for consultation, collaboration, and escalation of care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide on-call medical coverage for the Emergency Department and inpatient acute care unit during assigned weekends
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients presenting to the emergency room within scope of practice and hospital privileges
- Admit, round on, manage, and discharge acute care inpatients as appropriate
- Order, interpret, and communicate diagnostic tests, labs, and imaging results
- Perform procedures within credentialed scope and competency
- Stabilize and coordinate transfer of patients requiring higher levels of care
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, EMS, respiratory therapy, laboratory, radiology, and other departments
- Complete medical documentation accurately and timely within the electronic medical record
- Participate in patient care coordination and discharge planning
- Communicate professionally with patients, families, and team members
- Follow hospital policies, medical staff bylaws, compliance standards, and regulatory requirements
- Utilize physician back-up appropriately for consultation or complex patient management
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
- Current Kansas APRN or PA licensure (or eligibility)
- DEA registration and prescriptive authority required
- Current BLS, ACLS, and/or ATLS certifications preferred
- Emergency medicine, hospitalist, rural health, or acute care experience preferred
- Ability to work independently while utilizing collaborative physician support appropriately
Physical & Mental Requirements
- Ability to respond promptly to emergency situations
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist patients as needed
- Ability to multitask and make sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and critical thinking skills required
