Position Description
Provides primary care as part of a health care team in an ambulatory setting in a particular discipline. Provides patient education and counseling as well as physical assessment. May participate in teaching programs for students and other student residents. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals. Some positions in the classification require travel to outreach clinics and home visits, and participation in educational efforts and special programs that occur outside of normal working hours.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Elicits records and interprets a complete health history including all obstetrical, past medical, family and psycho-social aspects.
  • Performs a complete newborn physical examination, assessment stethoscope and distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Orders tests and procedures as necessary.
  • Writes admissions, discharges and medication orders with co-signatures.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as necessary.
  • Formulates care plan of care based on physical exam of other data and implements plan.
  • Consults with attending or resident physicians prior to initiation of major procedure or plan.
  • Responsible for attending Labor & Delivery for consults, vaginal deliveries and C-sections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active unrestricted certification Neonatal Nurse Practitioner issued by the National Certification Corporation (NCC). Active or eligible for license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Texas Board of Nursing and Advanced Practice Nurse status designation as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Eligible for Delegated Prescriptive Authorization through the Texas Board of Nursing. Active enrollment in NCC (National Certification Corporation). Certified in NRP APN status designation as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or if Physician Assistant: Previous Pediatrics experience other duties as assigned.
  • Bi-lingual competence in English and Spanish.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program
  • Current RN license in the State of Texas or have the ability to transfer your license to Texas.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate nursing specialty from an approved certification program as recognized by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Recognition by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners as an Advance Practitioner.
